The bottle can tell you about the region where the wine is made, the specific type of wine inside and other such things. A wine bottle is generally made of glass and typically holds 750ml of wine. The size and shape of the bottles can differ according to different wine producing regions.
Bordeaux- The most common shape of wine bottle is the Bordeaux bottle. The bottle is straight-sided with tall shoulders and a major punt (dimple at the bottom of the bottle).The bottle is used for Bordeaux, sherry and port varieties of wine. The bottle has dark green color for red wines, light green for dry white wine and clear glass for sweet wines.
Burgundy- This bottle holds the Burgundy and Rhone varieties of wine. They have sloping shoulders and a small punt. The bottles are generally sturdy and heavy and have dark green color for both red and white wines.
Mosel and Alsace- These bottles are tall, slender and narrow with little or no punt. The color of these bottles can vary from darker to medium green. Some winemakers also use the traditional amber color.
Rhine- The bottle is quite similar to the Mosel and Alsace bottle. The distinguished character of this bottle is the color which has traditionally been amber.
Champagne- The Champagne and sparkling wine bottles are thick walled with slightly sloping shoulders and a deep pronounced punt. The bottle has these particular characteristics so as to contain the pressure inside the bottle. The bottles usually have dark to medium green color.
