Port Wine
Port wine is a sweet fortified dessert wine which originated from the Douro Valley in the northern sphere of Portugal. It is a Portuguese style of wine and Portugal is one of the leading and famous producers of wine across the globe. Port wine is typically a red wine and a sweet dessert wine which is served as a dessert after dinner. It is a famous wine that is fortified with brandy spirit. The winemakers of Port wine are known as “shippers”. Port wines are added to variety of dishes such as fish courses and meat. Port wine is rich in aroma and has several types; each type being universally famous.
The most famous type of Port is Ruby, Late Bottled Vintage and Tawny. Ruby Port is the most extensively found Port and is an expensive one too. Late Bottled Vintage Port has prolonged exposure to oak which enhances its flavor and taste. Tawny Port undergoes aging in oak casks for a longer span of time, resulting in a tawny color.
The grape varieties that are widely cultivated and utilized for the production of Port wines are: - Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tempranillo, Tinta Barroca etc. These grapes are appropriate for aging and produces long lasting flavors. Port wines are thus rich in flavor and appreciated by people from every corner of the world.
Port wine goes well with cheese, nuts, melon and cake and when it is poured into a 4-5 ounce stemmed glass containing sides which slope inward, it tastes best and awesome. Port wine is generally heavier, sweeter, richer and contains high level of alcohol content than most other wines. There is an addition of brandy spirit in Port wines which stops the fermentation prior to all the sugar is altered to alcohol, resulting in a wine containing 19.5 percent or 20 percent alcohol. Port wine is thus generally referred as a sweet red wine containing 20 percent alcohol. It possesses low tannin and acidity. Port wines are considered an ideal drink to enjoy as it possesses a rich spicy flavor and high alcohol content; yet tastes very smooth and gentle. Port wines have an extraordinary longevity as compared to other wines. Since few decades Port wines are one of the world’s famous wines.
