Holding and Drinking Wines

The golden rule of thumb for holding wine glass is to always hold the glass by its stem. Whatever is the size and shape of the glass or whatever type of wine it is, the same rule is applied every time. If the glass is held by its bowl, the heat of the body will warm the wine. The change in temperature can affect the taste of wine and change its characteristics.

Most white wines and Champagnes are served chilled. If the glass is held by its bowl, the alcohol in the wine will give a sharpness to it, making it difficult to drink the wine. Also you cannot see the clarity or proper color of the wine, if the glass is not held by the stem. To hold the glass properly, hold the stem of the glass between the index finger and thumb.

Drinking wine at a restaurant-

Wine is a perfect compliment for a fancy restaurant dinner. But ordering wine in a restaurant can be quite complicated. If you are confused as to which wine to order you can consult the sommelier or waiter. They will assist you in choosing the wine according to the food you have ordered. Always check the label of the wine before the wine server opens it. This is to make sure if it is the same vintage (year) and bottle that you had ordered. The server might also place the cork next to you so that you can check if the cork has molds or if it is too dry. The mold might indicate if the wine is too old and a dry cork will indicate that the wine was not stored properly. After opening the bottle the server will pour a small amount in your glass so that you can smell, taste and approve the wine. Also do make sure that the wine is served at the proper temperature.
