Know your Wine

Wine is prepared from fermented grape juice and is generally referred as an alcoholic beverage. Wine is made by fermenting crushed grapes and utilizing different types of yeast. Grapes have the capability to ferment devoid of the addition of enzymes, acids, sugars or other nutrients. For the production of wine, different types of strains of yeast and varieties of grapes are used depending on the type of wine.

Wines have a rich history from around 6000 BC and first appeared in Europe about 4500 BC. Wines were widespread and very common in ancient Rome, Greece and Thrace. Wine is believed to be originated in region which is now within the borders of Iran and Georgia. It has played a significant role in religion throughout human history.

There are different types of wine such as red, white, blush, sparkling etc prepared from different varieties of grapes. The red wine as the name suggests is typically red and has more than 50 different varietals that is dominating the wine market globally. The grape skins are accountable for the distinctive color of red wine as the skins are in contact with the grape’s juice during the fermentation process. There are many types of white wine such as: - Pinot Blanc, Rhone White Blends, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc, Reisling, Chenin Blanc etc which are known for its aromas. These wines are also known as refreshing wines. Sparkling wines consist of high level of carbon dioxide which makes the wine fizzy. United States is an important manufacturer of sparkling wine. The typical example of sparkling wine is Champagne. There are many fruit wines prepared from different fruits such as apple wines, cherry wines, pineapple wines, elderberry wines etc. Dessert wines are also known as pudding wines and as the name suggests it is served with the dessert or pudding after the dinner. Dessert wines are sweet wines that become a part of dessert menu.

Winemaking is a process which begins with the selection of grapes and ends with the bottling of wine. Wine has an inherent ability to improve in taste and quality with aging of wine. Aging of wine holds the potential to alter the color, aroma, taste and mouthfeel of the wine which makes it more pleasurable to the taster. The proper storage of wine is essential as it serves the purpose of wine aging. Improper or inadequate conditions can lead to the deterioration of wines. The key factors that need to be maintained are temperature, humidity and light in order to retain the wine for a longer period.

Wine has been regarded as beneficial beverage due to the fact that it has a profound impact on the health of human beings. It is a renowned and significant beverage that enhances the broad range of Mediterranean and European style cuisines, from the traditional and simple to the most complex and sophisticated. Wine is usually accompanied with cheese, meat etc as it goes well with it. Few wines are known as light- wines as it contains only 15-20% of alcohol. Wine is a very popular beverage cherished by everyone around the world. Wine lovers have been blessed with variety of wines found globally.
