Massandra Sherry 1775

Massandra Sherry de la Frontera 1775, popularly known as the Massandra Sherry 1775 is one of the most expensive wines which was sold for a whopping $43,500 for a single bottle at Sotheby’s London in 2001. It came from the collection of Massandra Winery which is well known for its large collection (over a million) of both Russian and European vintage wines bearing the Imperial seal. Among these, the 1775 Sherry was the oldest European wine.
1784 Chateau d’Yquem
Fetching a huge price of $ 56,588, the 1784 Chateau d’Yquem is the most expensive white wine that was ever sold. It is a Premier Cru Supérieur (Great First Growth) wine and was bought by an unknown buyer at an auction in 1986. It is said that Thomas Jefferson (third US president) owned the bottle as his initials can still be seen on the bottle. This adds to the charm of the wine and makes it one of the most sought out wines by wine collectors.
The wine is a sweet white wine which was made from Semillon grapes and it comes from the very famous Sauternes district, located in southern part of Bordeaux, France.
Th. J 1787 Chateau Lafitte
The Th. J Chateau Lafitte, a Bordeaux variety of wine, is considered to be the most expensive wine in the world. It got sold for an astounding $160,000 for a single bottle! The wine was bought by Christopher Forbes, the vice president of Forbes magazine and son of Malcolm Forbes at the Christie’s auction in 1985.
The wine bottle was found in an old building in Paris behind a brick cellar along with some other top quality wines. It supposedly belonged to Thomas Jefferson, the third president of US as his initials ‘Th. J’ are etched on the bottle. Jefferson was known to be a wine connoisseur who loved to collect the finest wines. He was an ambassador to France from 1785 to 1789 and loved to visit French wineries.
1907 Shipwrecked Heidsieck

The Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck is one of the most expensive champagnes which fetched an astronomical price of $275,000 at an auction. The champagne was found in a shipwreck of Jönköping, a Swedish freighter, in the Gulf of Finland. The Jönköping was specially commissioned to deliver wines to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. But a German submarine hit the ship during the World War I in 1916 and the ship sank with all the 2000 bottles of wine. After 80 long years, in 1998, all the 2000 wine bottles were found. These bottles are sold at auctions across the world for huge prices.
The wine comes from the Heidsieck champagne house.
1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Jeroboam
A six magnum case of Jeroboam Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1945 was sold for a staggering $345,000 ($57,500 for a single bottle) to an unknown bidder in 2006, taking it to the list of most expensive wines. The wine is a rare vintage wine which enjoys the fame as it comes from the cellar of the castle. The bottles carry a ‘V’ sign that represents victory and end of World War II.
Even after fifty years the wine retains its exuberant youthfulness, making it one of the most sought out wine of the 20th century. The soul of the wine is the juicy ripe fruit extract and rich aromas. It is said that a single drop of the wine is equivalent to the price of diamonds.
