1784 Chateau d’Yquem

Fetching a huge price of $ 56,588, the 1784 Chateau d’Yquem is the most expensive white wine that was ever sold. It is a Premier Cru Supérieur (Great First Growth) wine and was bought by an unknown buyer at an auction in 1986. It is said that Thomas Jefferson (third US president) owned the bottle as his initials can still be seen on the bottle. This adds to the charm of the wine and makes it one of the most sought out wines by wine collectors.

The wine is a sweet white wine which was made from Semillon grapes and it comes from the very famous Sauternes district, located in southern part of Bordeaux, France. The Chateau d’Yquem was the only Sauternes(French dessert wine) given the very prestigious Premier Cru Supérieur rating by the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The rating indicates superiority over other wines and also fetches a higher price.

Thomas Jefferson, known for his excellent taste in wines, had visited the Chateau and fell in love with the wine. Jefferson is also supposed to have ordered 250 bottles of the 1784 Chateau d’Yquem vintage wine for his own collection. The wine obviously is not drinkable today, but it still holds a great value for wine connoisseurs and lovers because of its legendary history.
