1907 Shipwrecked Heidsieck

The Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck is one of the most expensive champagnes which fetched an astronomical price of $275,000 at an auction. The champagne was found in a shipwreck of Jönköping, a Swedish freighter, in the Gulf of Finland. The Jönköping was specially commissioned to deliver wines to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. But a German submarine hit the ship during the World War I in 1916 and the ship sank with all the 2000 bottles of wine. After 80 long years, in 1998, all the 2000 wine bottles were found. These bottles are sold at auctions across the world for huge prices.
The wine comes from the Heidsieck champagne house. It is supposedly 200 years old. The Heidsieck & Co “Monopole” in Champagne, France was found by Florens-Louis Heidsieck in the year 1785. Today the Heidsieck & Co is owned by Vranken Company.
Many of the bottles were auctioned at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Moscow. In fact the ‘Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck’ got its astounding price of $275,000 in one of the hotel auctions. The vintage, the quality, the intriguing history and the interesting way in which the bottles were found from the bottom of the ocean after 80 years adds to the appeal of the wine, making it one of the most expensive champagnes in the world.
