Bordeaux

The Bordeaux wine region located in France is arguably the most famous wine producing region in the world, often called as the Wine Capital of the World. The wines of Bordeaux fetch a huge price in the market because of the prestige attached to it. Any wine produced in this region is called the Bordeaux wine but the most popular wines are the ‘clarets’ or the classic red wines.

The region is producing wine since the 8th century and today has about 57 appellations, 287,000 acres of vineyards with 10,000 wine châteaux (producers) and annually produces 850 million bottles of wines. The most famous and sought out wine is the Bordeaux Red often made from Cabernet Sauvignon and blended with Merlot and Cabernet France

Bordeaux lies to the south western part of France and is divided into Left and Right Bank areas by the Gironde River. The Left Bank is more famous for its wine which includes the sub-regions of Medoc, Graves, Margaux, Pauillac and Pessac- Léognan while the Right Bank includes the sub-regions of Pomeril, Saint- Émilion, Blaye and Bourg and in the middle is the Entre-Deux-Mers region. All these sub-regions have their own appellations. Though both the banks produce a variety of wine styles, the Left Bank is prominently known for its Cabernet Sauvignons while Right Bank is more inclined towards Merlots.

Bordeaux has many First Growth (Premier Cru) producers like Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Mouton-Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Haut-Brion Pessac, Château d'Yquem.

The region is also a favorite amongst tourists and wine enthusiasts worldwide. Apart from the vineyards, there are many ancient architectural buildings and museums that are thronged by the tourists. The city is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
