Wine Storage

Storage is a significant concern for any type of wine that is subjected to preservation for long- term aging. Wines that are produced today are destined for short-term consumption (nearly 24 hours from purchasing), while there are few circumstances in which wines are kept away for long-term aging.Wines are one such commodity which possesses the potential to improve with age as well as have the ability to quickly decay if not kept in proper or adequate conditions.

In ancient days, the wine merchants use to handle the long-term storage but after the mid 20th century the duty of storing and handling wine has significantly fallen to customers or consumers. A wine cellar refers to the storage room for wine in barrels or bottles, or more rarely in plastic containers and carboys. Wine cellars are beneficial as they protect wines from potentially harmful extrinsic influences, providing a constant temperature and darkness. Wines are natural, perishable beverage. When they are exposed to light, heat, fluctuations in humidity and temperature, all types of wine can decay or spoil. If wines are appropriately stored, they not only uphold their quality but few essentially enhance in flavor, aroma, complexity and taste as they mature.

The key factors that play an important role in preserving wine and have a direct impact on wine’s condition are: - humidity, light and temperature. A few degree of humidity is ideal for wines in order to maintain wines with cork inclusion from drying. Wine experts suggest that wines must not be stored in a refrigerator as the refrigeration procedure frequently embraces dehumidifying, which can rapidly dry out corks. Light and ultra-violet rays can harmfully respond to the phenolic compounds in the wine and allow it to spoil. Air is considered as a foe of wine. Bottle size plays an important role in storage of wine. Wine stored in bottles contain some amount of air space or ullage. The bigger the bottle, the little air space per milliliter of wine, leading in enhanced storage conditions. In order to keep wine safe, temperature is another important factor. Exposure to high temperature for long span of time is not suitable for wines as they may develop bad flavors. Many experts suggest that stable temperatures between 10 and 15°C (50 and 59°C) are ideal for the storage conditions of wine. Labels should also be protected during the storage of wines.

Few wines are very expensive and thus proper storage conditions must be followed in order to guarantee that the wines last for a longer time.
