Wurstmarkt in Germany

The Wurstmarkt wine festival is known for the celebration of admirable local wines. In the town of Bad Durkheim in Germany, this wine festival occurs every second and third weekend in the month of September. It is situated in the center of Rhineland-Palatinate which is the biggest wine growing region in Germany. Durkheim’s Wurstmarkt wine festival is one of the biggest, most entertaining and traditional communal festival in Germany.
This largest festival is celebrated from last 570 years. It also prides itself in becoming the world’s largest wine festival. This event started as a fair for wine growers and local peasants and today attracts over 600,000 tourists annually.
Wine is one of the unique characteristics of the festival. One can enjoy more than 150 varieties of wines in over 50 diverse places. This wine festival is entertaining as one can relish different wines – from the finest ice-wine to the mellow Reisling. Many people enjoy their wines in the large wine halls or at the small traditional wine stand known as “Schubkarchler”. No matter wherever they drink, the Durkheim wine never loses its aroma and flavor. Weindorf- the wine village is the perfect place for people preferring intimate and calm atmosphere.
Wurstmarkt is easy to reach by rail or bus from any route- round the clock. The prominent attraction of the Wurstmarkt is the earth’s biggest wine barrel which can embrace or hold forty-four million gallons of wine but is converted into a multi-storey wine shop.
The “Schubkarchler stalls” are small wine tents comprising wooden benches and tables. There are 36 such stalls; each stall having a capacity to accommodate 120 people. Many varieties of famous Durkheim wines and sparkling wines are offered to the visitors in this Wine Fair. There are many wine halls such as: - Spreuer wine hall, Hamel wine hall and Ehresmann wine hall where it is always crowded and full of entertainment. On the first Monday, Wurstmarkt offers combination of literature and wine which is highly recommended. Karl Rader, a local poet quoted that Wurstmarkt is the only festival where one can meet old friends whom one has never seen before. This is the place where one enjoys tasting different wines as well as experiencing refreshing Durkheim wines.
